Destination Kerala - Malappuram

Malappuram is situated 50 Km. south east of Calicut. It has been the military headquarters from ancient times. The Zamorins of Calicut had their sway over this place and had stationed a part of their militia here.The important rivers flowing through the district are the Chaliyar, Kadalundi and Barathapuzha.

Air : The nearest airport is at Karippur (36 Km)
Rail : The nearest main railway station is at Calicut. There is also another railway station at Tirur.
Road : Malappuram is connected by good motorable roads to various cities of Kerala.
Places of Interest
Thirunavaya : Thirunavaya on the banks of Bharathapuzha is a place of great historical importance. It is situated 8 Km. south of Tirur. In olden days the "Mamankam " festival was held here. This was a grand assembly of the rulers of Kerala held once in 12 years, in which one among them was selected as the Emperor of Kerala. The last festival was celebrated in 1755. Now Sarvodaya Mela is held here every year.
Perinthalmanna (Thali temple): Perinthalmanna is situated 20 Km south east of Malappuram town. Thali temple is about 3 Km. west of Angadippuram on the way to Malappuram from Perinthalmanna.The Thirumandhamkunnu temple at Angadippuram dedicated to Goddess Durga is an important pilgrim centre in Malappuram. The colourful festival Pooram is celebrated in this temple during March-April.
Pazhayangadi Mosque : This is an important pilgrim centre for the Muslims and is associated with the Muslim Saint Muhammed Shah popularly known as Kondotty Thangal. The ‘Valiya Nercha’ festival of the mosque is an important festival. The mosque is situated at Kondotty on the Malappuram-Calicut route.
Tirur : The father of Malayalam literature, late Sri. Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan was born here and a memorial is built here in his honour.
Nilambur : Nilambur is famous for its teak plantations. The oldest teak plantation in the world “Conollys Plot” is situated here. A Teak wood museum also functions here.
Tanur : Tanur, a coastal town of Malappuram district,
was one of the earliest settlements of the Portuguese. It
is believed that St. Francis Xaviour visited this place in 1546. Keraldesapuram temple, one of the oldest in Kerala dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is situated about 3 Km. south of Tanur town.
Kottakkal:
Kottakkal is known for its famous Ayurvedic centre, Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala. There is an Ayurveda college and an Ayurveda mental hospital at Kottakkal.
Kottakkal Aryavaidya Sala : Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala (Ph : 0493-742216), one of the pioneers in uplifting Ayurveda, was founded in 1902 by Vaidyaratnam P.S. Varier. It offers treatment such as Dhara, Pizhichil, Navarakizhi, Sirovasti, Siropala etc. Some Treatment is for 7 to 90 days. But the usual period is 28days. In addition to this, it offers treatment like Kashayavasty, Snehavasthi, Snehapanam, Nasyam, Pichu etc.
Prior appointment of at least 10 days in advance is necessary to consult the chief physician. The nursing home has family blocks, double rooms, single rooms and suites for accommodation. Foreign nationals should meet their expenses in foreign exchange only.
Transport
The nearest airport is at Karippur, 25 Km away on the Kottakkal - Calicut route and the nearest main railway station is at Calicut (48 Km). There is also a railway station at Tirur. Kottakkal is connected by good motorable raods with other centres of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamilnadu. Most of the buses from Cochin to Calicut pass through Kottakkal.
